The Part-Time English Programs at The Boston Language Institute offer an opportunity for people who work during the day to improve their English proficiency in evening and weekend classes. Students also have the benefit of practicing their language skills in small groups of 4 to 12 students. The following courses are taught using the Communicative Method, which views each aspect of language learning -- grammar, conversation, reading and writing -- as a necessary support for the others. Students learn new vocabulary and grammar while enhancing their English communication skills in a discussion-based class. There are two schedules for this class. New students start every week throughout the year.
The goal of this course is to help students improve their intelligibility when they speak English and reduce their native language accents. Students learn how to correctly produce and practice the individual sounds, syllable stress, word stress, rhythm, intonation, and features of connected speech in American English. Additionally, pronunciation instruction has a positive effect on listening comprehension. This class is designed for students who have an intermediate to advanced level of English proficiency. There are two sessions of this class. New students start every week throughout the year.
The Writing and Editing Program is a specialized 40-hour course that meets for 4 hours per week for 10 weeks. The goal of this course is to help students write clearly and accurately. The focus will be on using correct grammatical structures and writing clear sentences and paragraphs. Students will learn to detect and correct grammatical errors in their writing. Students will practice proofreading, editing, and revising their writing. Grammar will be incorporated in the context of the writing and editing assignments. This course is designed for non-native English speakers with an advanced level of English proficiency who want to improve their writing skills. The class size is 3 to 8 students. It is offered seasonally (winter, spring, summer, and fall). There are two class schedules.
