LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION, TEACHER TRAINING, TRANSLATION,
CONFERENCE INTERPRETING & CROSS CULTURAL TRAINING

January 16, 2019
To all students:

This is to inform you that The Boston Language Institute is closed indefinitely. While the Institute has been struggling for some time, resulting in its recent Chapter 11 filing, we had hoped for a turnaround and a successful reorganization. However, the recent seizure by our lender Century Bank of our checking account funds has left us no choice but to terminate operations immediately. This is a regretful situation, but at the moment, we do not have the funds with which to continue to operate.

Over the coming days, we will be working to compile information on what is owed to each of you, and to collect what we can in outstanding billings. We are also speaking with the Bank about a return of the funds that were recently removed from our Bank account. I will keep you informed of the situation, and rest assured we are doing all we can to wind down our business in an orderly fashion.

I appreciate all of you, and I apologize profoundly for the current situation. Please be patient with us as we attempt to address the Institute’s obligations to its students.

Sincerely,

Who We Are

A Welcome from Our President

Since 1981, we at The Boston Language Institute have provided instruction and translation services in more than 140 languages, including English as a Second Language, to over 76,000 students, including corporate and governmental clients. Since 2000, the Institute’s internationally recognized TEFL Certificate Program has trained over 2400 English teachers, many of whom now form a world-wide network in over 30 countries, including the United States. The Wall Street Journal has lauded this program as “one of the better known programs in the country.”

At any one time, we are teaching 45 to 50 languages in evening, weekday and Saturday sessions, both in private lessons and small classes of 4 to 12 students. Instruction takes place both at the Institute in Kenmore Square and on-site at corporate locations. We employ the Communicative Approach, which can be summarized as developing student performance using every aspect of language learning – speaking, listening, reading and writing -- to support the others. Teachers focus on stimulating student speech rather than merely lecturing. Exploring the culture, a feature of all of our programs, brings the language home.

Many of our 120 skilled and experienced instructors have served the Institute for 5 to 15 or more years and some over 20. No small number are graduates of our TEFL Certificate Program, which will train you to teach any language you speak.

Cross Cultural Consulting is another service we provide to companies and governments doing business internationally. People from different cultures understand and respond to the same situation differently, with neither necessarily being right or wrong. In a nutshell, in seminars and private coaching, we explain why they act the way they do, why we act the way we do and how, by understanding each other, you build a successful relationship.

As we approach our 35th anniversary in 2016, we at The Boston Language Institute remain committed to giving back to the community that has been so good to us.We support, for example, about 30 different non-profit organizations per year. Programs fighting hunger, homelessness and abuse and educating youth are especially dear to our hearts. Among the organizations we support are WGBH Television, the Science Club for Girls, the Boston Food Bank, Covenant House, the Boston Chinese Neighborhood Center and the Irish International Immigrant Center, often by contributing foreign language classes to their annual auctions. We also provide mentoring through internships to American and international students and to international visitors through such organizations as World Boston and the Hubert Humphrey Scholars Program at Boston University.

If you would like a language class contributed to your organization’s auction, please call me, Siri Karm Singh Khalsa (“Siri Karm”), at 617-262-3500 x222.

If you honor us by pursuing a program at The Boston Language Institute, I promise you, on behalf of the entire Boston Language Institute team, an experience of excellence cultivated over 35 years that even you may not have anticipated.

God bless you.
